Toyota recalls 2.3 million vehicles

 
This time it’s 2.3 million vehicles with potentially sticky gas pedals, including Camrys assembled in Georgetown, Ky.

In the fall, Toyota recalled 4.2 million vehicles because floor mats were interfering with gas pedals.

Among the 2.3 million vehicles recalled Thursday for new gas pedal mechanisms, 1.7 million were among the floor mat recalls, the company announced.

While investigating the floor mat problem, Toyota said it found “isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms,” Toyota Motors Sales USA vice president Irv Miller said.

“There is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position, or return slowly to the idle position,” Miller said.

The new recall includes 2007-2010 Camrys and Tundras and Avalon vehicles for the years 2005 through 2010. RAV4, Matrix, and Corolla models from 2009 and 2010 are included in the recall. Other vehicles are the 2010 Highlander, and 2008 through 2010 Sequoia trucks.

Not affected by the recall are Lexus, Scion, Prius, Camry hybrid, Tacoma, Sienna, Venza, Solara, Yaris, 4Runner, and Cruiser sport utility vehicles.

“The condition is rare, but can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return, or in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position,” the Toyota release said.

Toyota owners should have the car towed to a dealership if the gas pedal sticks, because it appears that if the problem happens once, it could happen again, said Michelle Krebs, an auto analyst for Edmunds. com, a consumer news and automotive
